Beautiful Repair; Mending in Art and Fashion
COPENHAGEN CONTEMPORARY
Copenhagen (DK)

Minna Palmqvist is part of Copenhagen Contemporary’s first fashion exhibition in history; Beautiful Repair - Mending in Art and Fashion, with three works spanning from 2009 to 2023.

About the echibition:
A new aesthetic phenomenon is spreading across the worlds of art and fashion: mending aesthetics. Mending and recycling are gaining creative momentum, producing stunning experimental creations. Recycled materials, dead stock and sophisticated mending techniques beget rewarding stories and ornamentation giving new life to clothes and providing fertile ground for novel aesthetic expressions. The exhibition Beautiful Repair focuses on the exchange between two creative fields coming together in an exploration of clothes, our “second skin”. How do we communicate with our surroundings through fashion, and what importance do we assign to the objects we surround ourselves with – as a society and in our personal lives?

Created in partnership with ALPHA, the exhibition shows works by a host of artists and fashion designers, some for the first time in Denmark: Zadie Xa, Rasmus Myrup, Elina Heilanen, Minna Palmqvist, Lee Mingwei, Marie Sloth Rousing & Anna Clarisse Holck Wæhrens, Pia Camil, Idaliina Friman, Tenant of Culture, ALL-IN, Ella Morris, Kristine Sehested-Blad, Beatrice Stenmark, Rottingdean Bazaar, Chopova Lowena & Holly Blakey.

Att Konstruera ett Jag
RIAN Designmuseum
Falkenberg

UNDER (Massive) PRESSURE
SERGELS TORG
Stockholm

The public installation Under (Massive) Pressure shows an enormous banner pressed between to stiff plexi glass boards. Despite the pressure, the fabric manages to get free and spills out over the edges, showing materia that can't be contained.

The bright pink stands in contrast to the squares monochrome colours, like a cry for Something Else, while the text on the banner, though difficult to read, talks about longing for people to come together and make their voices heard.

The installation is part of the ongoing project Under Pressure which relates to the extreme strain put on people just by living and working in a neoliberal society, filled with featureless perfection.

The pieces made within the realm of this projects are made, by hand and in small scale, in Minna's studio. With the help of an old mangle machine she deforms and deconstructs garments and in that creates something new. This method of working relates to women's history and traditional ways of production.

Stockholm Fashion Week
SHOW at MISSCHIEFS TAKEOVER
Stockholm

This collection is no collection.
It is a manifestation of acting under pure pressure.
It is a snapshot of us all stumbling around, landing on our faces, getting up again sore but determined.

It is a mess of memories from a past we tend to glorify, and hopes for a future we know we need to work harder than our priviliges can handle to obtain.
It is dancing like crazy, breaking walls, furniture and seams in the Now, not to completely loose our minds.

Minna Palmqvist invites you to a mess of garments and objects, some made in 2014, some made 5 minutes before the show. With her way of working she wants to highlight the craziness in creating a new suit jacket, if the one made in 2015 is already perfect.

We do not need loads of new stuff.
We need new ways of looking at all the stuff we already have.

We need a new mindset.

UNDER PRESSURE
Solo Show at MISSCHIEFS TAKEOVER
Stockholm

Under Pressure gives us a glimpse into Minna Palmqvist's world were mirrors reflect distorted images and pink materia can't be contained.

Minnas pieces questions bodily norms – how we move in private and public spheres and how capitalist, neoliberal structures mold us and get into our heads.

In dealing with highly conflicting feelings about the fashion industry, Minna is always exploring new ways of working around the system, while still returning to her recurring themes and expressions.

What we see in this exhibition started out with a mangle machine, using literal physical pressure to deform and renew overstock garments and old collection leftovers - a way of examining the weight of our society on our bodies and minds.

KIM x MINNA x BON
Kimberly Ihre interprets Minna Palmqvist
for BON Magazine

After a long break from the fashion world, Minna Palmqvist invited photographer and art director Kimberly Ihre to interpret her work.

Kimberly says:
”I have always liked the sense of something about to break inside of us in Minna’s work, or something wanting to get out, but we stay calm and collected anyway. What is the difference between madness and creativity? I have wanted to find that positive nerve in madness.”

MISSCHIEFS TAKEOVER
Linnégatan 4, Stockholm

Minna Palmqvist is proud to announce being part of art and design collective Misshiefs as from July 2020.

Misschiefs Takeover was born in Stockholm in April 2020 out of an acute desire to actively support womxn artists so harshly impacted by the economic repercussions of the world pandemic.

”In a unique collaboration with a major Swedish real-estate company, we provide free art studio, exhibition and showroom spaces to selected womxn artists in temporary empty locations with strategic urban visibility. Misschiefs takes zero commission on all artworks sold because we believe in new ways of showing art by reducing the distance between the makers of art and the public, both commercially and as a human experience. We want to blur the boundaries that separate real people from real artists, as well as between artistic disciplines. We take over large empty spaces to push for more visiblity of womxn artists. Everywhere.”

Misschiefs is originally a groundbreaking feminist exhibition of contemporary collectible design showcasing a unique group of ten trailblazing Swedish womxn selected for the punk nature of their work, at the crossing of design, craft and art.
